Hi
I tried to install Thunderbird, why, because I wanted it to be my default mail and news reader. Instead of the ones that come with FC4.
I downloaded the Tar.gz file from Mozilla, but having a tough time trying to get it installed.
Now the version of FC4 I downloaded from fedoraforum.org, did not have Thunderbird already included in the package, why, how do I know , because when I went to Desktop, Preferances, More Preferances, and chose it as the default mail program, it was not on the list.
Rats!!!
Is there another place to get it, does YUM have it available, with self installing options, sort of speak?
What you are seeing is the problem with mixing source and binaries. If you install using only rpms, the system can deal with them and will put all files in expected places. If you use source, the rpm database will be unaware of the files and they don't put every file in expected places.
First, track down all the Thunderbird files and delete them. Then type yum install thunderbird (you may need to call it mozilla-thunderbird). It should do the installing for you.
Or find the Thunderbird rpm and it's dependencies and install with rpm -ivh <filename>.
thunderbird is included in the fc4 packges try the whereis tunderbird if you get the output /usr/bin/thunderbird, it means it is already installed, check on the Applications menu -> internet, if it is not there right click on the pannel add it to the pannel, if the ouput of whereis something else, install it form the fc4 cd's, when you start the thunderbird it will ask for as default email client just click on ok.
You can get the latest version from http://www.mozilla.org/ . It works right away. Also, it seems to me that its working directory is that included in the archive, and it has all the files needed. I extracted it in /home/user/.thunderbird and made a shortcut to the thunderbird file on my desktop. The first time you run it, it will import the profiles allready stored on your computer, and that's all... Goodluck!
