Testing is inadequate for new updates
 

Two weeks ago I tried to install the new kernel. Panic messages. I returned to the previous version without problems. After waiting a week, I retried the install and it worked. The difference--other updates that the new kernel required may have been installed. (Fc6xen version).

That is one example. This past week, I installed a new set of files, including firefox update 1.5.9. The latter installed ok, but two other web browsers no longer work. I am so frustrated with the rush to get updates out to end users without adequate testing, that I have frozen or stopped installing fc6 updates. Those updates include updates to x, and java.

So, Galeon, and Mozilla wont start on my system, only have notalus and firefox working. Installing an update seems to break other software.


Trying to compete on 6mo installs is insane. When there was only 1000 programs, the interation possibilities were 1000 by 1000 or a max of 1 X 10**6 possible interactions.

Now with XEN, and multiple versions of FC6, we have around 1500 by 1500 or 225 * 10**6 potential interactions. I cannot see a sustained release schedule with more than double the number of programs.

Slow down. Quality first.

PS. writing this from a xp system. Not a good feeling.

Fedora is supposed to be a testbed for RHEL and the Testing repo is deemed to be unstable by definition. This is why using bleeding edge stuff on a production box is dangerous.

Did you file reports so that the devs can fix these things?

There could be other reasons for your problems. I am currently using FC6 exclusively on my laptop and I have never had any issues with their updates. What repos are you using. If any of them are testing repos, then I suggest you disable them because they are not really meant for general use.

I have only the standard Fedora6 repros. update legacy, core, extras and NO TESTS.

My second version of FC6 (on backup hard drive) is fine. It is waiting for 41 updates, but I wont do the updates install, as I think it is too risky.

Will scan log files to see what I can find. Perhaps therein I will find my answer.
