System won't mount DVDs

I am having trouble mounting data DVDs under Core 3. I get the following error message
Code:
Unable to mount the selected volume
/dev/hdb Invalid argument
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified.
If I insert a blank DVD, it recognizes it as such and I can burn data to it, but then I can't mount if afterward Anyone have any idea what is going wrong?

Is /dev/hdb indeed your dvd drive? I would use /dev/cdroms/cdromX where X is the appropriate number. Most likely 0 if you only have the one drive. Can you mount cds on this drive with that device?
