Switching to new kernel

I just installed Fedora Core 3 on an old PII 333 MHz system with 128 MB and a 120 GB HDD to learn how to use Linux. I'm completely new to this and all my experience has been with DOS and MS Window systems to date. I used the "up2date" app to get the new kernel, and after some hours of HDD activity, it seemed to install OK. My problem is the message saying to reboot to try the new kernel. When I do I just boot the old version. So being completely new to this how do I switch over to boot the new kernel? The boot loader is grub by the way. You will have to spoon feed the instructions to me until I can learn a lot more about the system and then I hope not to need the training wheels any more so to speak. Thanks in advance for any help provided.

i'm not sure how far up2date goes in terms on configuration, but in a true and just world, it *should* be adding a new option to the grub boot menu. is there not an extra one? if not, post the contents of /boot/grub/grub.conf and details of which kernel versions you think was the old and new ones. also, the contents of /boot itself may be handy. (run ls -l in there)

Thanks for the reply.

The contents of /boot are:

config-2.6.10-1.741_FC3
initrd-2.6.10-1.741_FC3.img
System.map-2.6.10-1.741_FC3
vmlinuz-2.6.10-1.741_FC3

I look for a /boot/grub... entry but I can't see one. I guess that would say I'm not using grub? I'm sure it was installed when I load the OS.

Anyway the version I am using for the kernel is 2.6.9-1.667

Regards,

Lee

ok, if it's not grub, then it'll be lilo, whose conf is /etc/lilo.conf. remember that lilo is different to grub in that you need to update the boot sector each time the lilo config changes by running "lilo" as root. otherwise changes in the config file might not have passed to the MBR

I'll do that. I'm out of town now untill the weekend so I have to wait till then to check.

I was sure I had grub installed since I didn't change any of the default options for the boot loader when I installed the OS.

I did pick up two books, "Red Hat Linux Administration - A Beginners Guide", and the book "Fedora". Both books look like good reading. The first one mentions exactly what you sugessted I check, and do, if I am using lido for the boot loader.

Looks like I have a lot of reading to do.
