su and $PATH questions

When you run su and switch to root your $PATH info is never updated...is it possible to do this? I'm not sure where that stuff is added in the startup process...maybe /etc/profile??? When I login as root all my $PATH info is correct. Any pointers would be appreciated.

At the command line, instead of typing "su" you can type "su -" which isn't as easy (and dumps you in /root) but does get the job done.
