stopping X windows through ssh

I have a Fedora Core 4 server that had Gnome set as default when it boots. I want to disable it remotely and have it start with the CLI instead now that it is in the COLO. How can I go about doing it, but have the option to remotely start it so I can access it through the KVM?

You may be able to stop GNOME with command '/etc/init.d/gdm stop' or 'killall gdm'. That will stop your display manager and drop the display to the CLI. You can restart it with '/etc/init.d/gdm start' then use vnc to remote in.

Good start, but gdm is not in init.d directory. Only ones there are allow login and early login. I dont know what to look for to kill it.

Edit the /etc/inittab file and change the default run level from 5 to 3.
You can also enter "sudo /sbin/init 3" to change the run level while logged in.

In Fedora Core and many other distro's, init level 3 will start the services needed for multiuser console access. The Xorg server will not be started. If you are already in init level 5, you can change to init level 3. You don't have to reboot in other words. Now, X windows won't run until you start it manually such as with "startx".

OK, that makes sense. Will I still be able to log in at the console using CLI?

Are you logging in at the machine or remotely? At the machine, just log into one of the VTs. Just like when you press [CTRL]-[ALT]-F2 for example from X.

You might want to take a peek at /etc/inittab for lines like:
Code:
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --noclear tty1
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3
4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4
5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6
Here there are 6 terminals, which restart after someone logs off.
If sshd is running you can login remotely.

I believe this is exactly what you wanted.
