spanish Keyboard config

Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 1410 laptop with a Spanish keyboard.

I am running FC5, kernel 2.21.1. Gnome. I am having problems with displaying characters using Ctrl&Alt&'key required' - for instance Ctrl&Alt&2 - will produce the @ sign. Any idea on mapping keyboards to get round this - also a mapping for using this functonality in gnome terminal would be useful.

I am IT literate but new to Linux.

System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layout > Add New
