This is on a laptop. All I have are the built in speakers and the headphone jack.

I understand. The option I listed tells the driver to load the options for a 3 jack configuration like the one on your laptop. In addition to that option, there is another one you might try.

/etc/modprobe.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

reboot your computer... or

/etc/modprobe.conf
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=8 model=3stack

There are plenty of other options to try depending on your motherboard and manufacturer. There is also a wealth of information regarding the Intel audio drivers on this site (albeit in German).

What do you mean by 3 jack configuration? I have a headphone jack and a microphone jack in the front, however, when I get back into Fedora I'll try your /etc/modules.conf suggestions. Already tried options snd-hda-intel model=3stack but haven't tried options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=8 model=3stack yet. Hope it works!!!

hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout

The probe_mask option fixed a problem I was having, wherein I got no sound out. But, I used
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
instead of "probe_mask=8". You might try both, and maybe even others?

My problem was characterized by a line of the form
hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout
reported via dmesg as occurring during boot.
