Sound with FC5 on a Gateway Solo 2150

Hello, and thank you for looking into this post, it's appreciated.

I have installed Fedora Core 5 onto an old Gateway 2150 and I can't get sound to play at all, I have adjusted the ALSA settings, tried OSS, and I don't have any idea of why it doesn't work.

Thanks,

Ty

You are not providing very nuch information. What is the sound card? Does it show up in lspci? Are the snd modules loaded (look at lsmod)? Are you certain the main volume is not muted?

Post back a little more information.

It says my sound card is a Labs Ectiva EV1938 by Creative, and I'm a noob, and don't know where or what snd or lsmod is... sorry. Sound is not muted on any output or input channel.

OK, open a terminal, log in as root, and type:

Quote:
lsmod
Look for any entry that has snd in it. There should be three or four of them (mixer, etc.)

By muted, I meant through alsamixer. Many times, sound is muted by default on a new installation. From the terminal, type:

Quote:
alsamixer
This will open a text-based graphic should the various channels of your sound card. The master volume control should be the first on the left. You can navigate the channels with the arrow keys, and change entries with the space key. Just make sure the master volume is not muted. Also, the name if your sound card should be shown at the top.

These things usually solve sound problems, but if it doesn't, there are other things you can try.
