Sound quit on me

Hi,

Can you help me analyze this? I am getting the following messages in the system log

Jun 13 12:00:10 prieks xinetd[8607]: warning: can't get client address: Transport endpoint is not connected

Jun 13 12:23:35 prieks modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0

What does id: EMC40 (Unknown) mean?

In /etc/modules.conf it says
alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1

modprobe -c gives
alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1

I tried sndconfig, and the sample clip played ok. sndconfig wrote a new /etc/modues.conf, which is basically the same as the old one. However, when I try to play a .pl file, I hear just a short 'click' and then firefox quits with an error. There is no sound in mplayer either.

The xinetd[8607] error has to do with fam ( I am guessing it does not have anything do with sound or anything else I care for, but I add it for full info)
[1000]janis@prieks:/home/janis ps -ef | grep 8607
janis 8607 8244 0 12:00 ? 00:00:00 fam
janis 9427 9194 0 12:36 pts/5 00:00:00 grep 8607
[1001]janis@prieks:/home/janis

Sound used to work, so I am wondering if it is some package I have installed recently or some other change to my system that causes this... Help?

Janis
