sound issues with cd player and xmms

When I play a cd or play mp3s in fedora, (this just started last night--i may have upgraded xmms through apt-get, I don't remember.) It plays back too fast, muffled, or only part of the music--for instance i played a rock cd and only one guitarist was playing with muffled drums. The singing and bass was gone. WHat's changed???
