Sound Issues - Only one program can use sound at a time

It seems that only one program can use the sound driver at a time. If I am playing my music, the Gaim sounds won't work. When I pause the music, all the Gaim sounds play all in a row like my system can't play two sounds at the same time. This still happens even if I try to change the audio subsystem that Gaim uses to play sounds. This happens with other programs that use audio too.

I'm using Fedora Core 3, but I remember this happening with Mandrake 10.0 too. My computer is a Powerspec 9341, and uses intergrated SoundMAX audio.

Any ideas? Thank you.

you need to enable the "fullduplex" feature, ALSA should do this for you, but you may have to add some lines to your /etc/modules.conf file.............
