sound card on dell computers

I'm a CS teacher and I run a lab of computers using fedora 2. when i try to do a sound card detection, the system correctly identifies the card as:

Intel Corp.
model: 82801BA/BAM AC97 Audio
module: snd-intel8x0

but the test sound doesn't play.

Any ideas???

Looks like it is detecting the on-board sound.
Is the on-board sound enabled in the BIOS?
Just out of curiosity - What model of Dell are you using?

replies to questions asked by others

The model is a Optiplex GX240.

The sound card is enabled in the bios, because the sound works when the computers are booted into windoze (they are all dual boot machines)

I'll try the commands suggested by the last poster

thanks!

OK, so the alsamixer worked like a champ, but how do you save the settings?

I dont know if you found your solution for this but the command:

/usr/sbin/alsactl store

stores the settings for alsamixer.

It has been a while since I have messed with this setup, but I believe with Fedora Core 3 everything just kind of worked. Is everything unmuted? I remember that I had problems once and I had just forgot to unmute everything.

All,
Sorry I didnt post in here. Well I got my sound working by unmuting everything but now only XMMS doesnt play. Sounds play everywhere else but XMMS isnt playing. I installed the XMMS rpm for mp3 support. I wonder if that screwed anything up...
