sound acting funny

Installed FC2 and updated it.
installed RealPlayer10 and got the plugins working in Firefox.
Watching videos from the browser works ok. The sound is low even thought it is turned up all the way.
Can't get sound to come through the cd player or the DVD player. Sees the movies and the song titles and plays like all is well.. just no sound...

have the link to the dvd

[tim@localhost tim]$ ls -al /dev/dv*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Oct 18 19:59 /dev/dvd -> hdc
[tim@localhost tim]$

any tips for a noobie?

This was a fix for me - sound was working fine until I went into KDE and suddenly no sound in either KDE or Gnome. What I found was that KDE's Kmix settings are almost zero'd by default and that they affect the Gnome sound as well. Once I'd maxed Kmix, all was back to normal.

Thanks

Rebooted and loged in to Gnome instead of KDE. Sound is way louder. Still no sound on DVD in Gnome. Just loud noise like a part of the audio just bits of it popping over and over.
Still no sound on the CD player either.

How get sound and video to work in Firefox

I'm a newb and probably always will be and having trouble getting sound and video to work in firefox. It shows that I have RealPlayer10, Shockwave and Flashplayer all installed as plugins, but my sound and scrolling applets on my Fantasy Football site do not work. I get the message that "additional plugins are required to display ll the media on this page", but when I click on the install plugins none are found.
My sound in other places seems to turn itself off all the time and I have to manually go in and up the volume in the volume control panel. Can I lock it so it stays on?
Sorry for the two or more questions, but I have many more. I am trying to use Fedora Core 2 and basically I like it, but I am still on the up side of the learning curve.

How did you get the video and sound to work in Firefox? How did you install RealPlayer10? I must have done something wrong cuz I can't get anything in Firefox, but right now I am listening to music thru the built in audio player. Works just fine.
