sony ericsson (usb0) suddenly stops working with networkmanager ethernet usb

running fedora 8 on my laptop. recently my sony ericsson which i regularly use for 3g internet access suddenly stopped working with network manager as in it does not even list as a device.
my kernel detects it, loads module
Code:

usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4
usb 2-1: configuration #3 chosen from 1 choice
cdc_acm 2-1:3.1: ttyACM0: USB ACM device
cdc_acm 2-1:3.3: ttyACM1: USB ACM device
usb0: register 'cdc_ether' at usb-0000:00:13.0-1, CDC Ethernet Device, 02:80:37:1a:03:00
usb0: no IPv6 routers present

it does not always register in /sbin/ifconfig either. the phone is still fine over kppp though. can someone give me an idea what is going on?

your standard sony ericsson usb pc cable which is used for stuff like firmware flashing, file transfer etc. its the one that comes with the phone.
