When I launch the package updater, I get prompted to login as root, and then it gets stuck on "retrieving update information". An "exception occurred" dialog box appears saying:

This looks like a problem with the Fedora software repository and not with my PC, right?
Thanks in advance.
It's sort of both. If you haven't applied any maintenance to your system, you are running the original version of yum from the FC6 installation media, which is buggy. The first thing you need to do is to repeatedly try running (as root):
yum clean all
yum -y update yum
This will install the latest update to the updater itself. Subsequent updates should be easier, as error conditions will be handled better.

I entered both those commands into the terminal, thanks!
Looks like the problem was external; the Software Updater component was working today even before I ran those commands.
