smaller compiled kernel, will it copy?

Well, i just recompiled a 2.6.9-1 kernel om my quest for a leaner/quicker FC2. Stripped out all the sound/usb/scsi stuff and after bootup 'top' now shows 23Mb of mem being used, as opposed to the 53Mb from the stock release. Nifty! File size is down a little also. Still have some stuff in there i can remove also, but its things im not sure about yet.

Anyway, is it possible to backup this kernel image, (or compile one on another machine) and then copy it to the machine i want to use it on? I dont think i want all the gtk2, ncurses, xorg, qt stuff that im forced to install to compile a kernel.

How would i sort the modules out, if i copied the kernel over?

cheers..

hi there

when u comile a new kernel u copy the files(the kernel image, the initrd image and systen .map in ther .boot directory)if u copy that with a different name then u can make an entry for that in the grub.conf
and use differnt kernel during bootup and this wayu can choose any kernel dooring bootup

Yeah ive got that bit sorted ok, the kernel boots fine. But can i copy this new kernel to another system and run it ok? would i just copy those files and the relevant /lib/modules directory to the other system? or does it need to be reconfigured for each machine.

The point is that i want a trimmed down kernel for my server, but i dont want all the needed compiling libraries on it (GTK, ncurses, xorg) etc.
