Small annoyances with kernel upgrade (.2135.nptl)

Hi all,

After installing kernel 2.4.22-1.2135.nptl, I have lost the nice Fedora graphical boot up screen. The grub entries look correct (same as for *.2129.ntpl) and my NVIDIA install worked fine. Any ideas how to get his worked out.?

Otherwise everthing seems okay; still waiting for NTFS support to arrive .

You need to recompile the NVIDIA kernel module for the new kernel.. you need to do this everytime you upgrade your kernel.

ahem - thanks, but I said the NVIDIA install went fine. I did the recompile and it works. What does not work is the graphical boot only - the screen simply goes blank and comes up later in the graphical greeter.

That's why I said it's a slight annoyance

Couldn't help much .. I've nvidia kernel module (hence the rhgb) works for my kernel 2.6.0 .. so I guess it should work for kernel 2.4.22 too ..

Same here...I installed the NEW NVIDIA driver and the blank screen during
graphical boot is all I get....then, X works fine for the log-in. So your problem
isn't YOU alone. The OTHER problem is Open GL performance. I usually test
this with Celestia as this is a very demanding program.....performance was
rough and slow. I checked the libraries...all is as it should be. CPU is at 100%
during rendering....this isn't unusual with that program, but it used to run
smoothly with the old driver. I re-installed the OLD driver (4496) and everything
is OK again....I am looking for information as to why this is happening.

First, the boot thing as the original poster posted, and again, if anyone has seen
poor performance:

AMD Athlon XP 2600+
1024 MB RAM
ASUS A7V8X with KT400 chipset

Thanks

I also noticed poor performance with the latest Nvidia driver 5328. I installed it on 3 machines (2 Fedora and 1 SuSE9.0) and tested them with glxgears. The frame rates reported were all slower than those with 4496.

Ah, I do have problem with the lastest NVIDIA driver .. GLX couldn't be loaded. Went back to the older release.. and I guess will stock into this for quite a while.

OK, now I know that it's just not me. I too, will stick with the older driver until I can
find the right settings or switches to get things well again. Funny thing is, asside from
getting rid of "dri" and changing the module with the "ignoredisplaydevices" option,
the 4496 driver works well right out of the box...so what is so different about THIS
driver that makes it so slow or bad on OpenGL stuff on MY (and maybe your) machine?

The read-me talks about improper libraries, but all of that checks out fine as far
as I can tell on my machine and frankly, I don't want to spend days figuring it
all out...so since 4496 works well, I'll just stay there until the NEXT release (and
keep a nice safe copy of it in the mean-time) or a pointer to fixing the problem
turns up here or somewhere..

Thanks....and about the original post, I have no clue what is causing that, as
X starts up just fine AFTER the boot-up....so that is weird too about this
driver.

Thanks

Nice to know that I'm not alone here, however this brings up a couple questions:

I upgraded since I was unable to figure how to recompile the NVIDIA driver without issuing the --force-update command which (sloppily on my behalf) downloaded the new driver.

When one installs a new kernel, what is the command to recompile without forcing the update? I would assume the only way is to 1) uninstall the driver, 2) boot in the new kernel and 3) install the driver. Is this correct? Otherwise I get the message that I already have the latest NVIDIA drivers. Seems a bit unwieldy.

The other question is slightly more embarrassing - now I need troll around to find the 4496 driver - I didn't keep the old one. If anyone has any pointers to sites with the older driver, let me know. In the meantime, I'll start Googling.

Thanks -

That was easy - found the old driver at

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-4496.html
