Slow internet connection compared with windows
Hi,
I am currently running Fedora 14 and have noticed that in comparison to windows 7, I have a slow internet connection. I have BTInfinity and the download speed I get on my windows 7 machine is ~37MB/s. Conversely, the download speed I get on my Fedora 14 machine is ~4-5MB/s. I have tried both speedtest.net and broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk. The results are consistent. Up until 2 days ago, I had Fedora 16 installed and the speed was still slower on that setup i.e. ~4-5MB/s. I downgraded to Fedora 14 due to some incompatibility issues with some apps while on F16. I have done a search and have not been able to find a definitive answer for the slower speed on my Fedora setup. Here is the output of my resolv.conf: # cat /etc/resolv.conf # Generated by NetworkManager domain home search home nameserver 192.168.1.254 # As suggested in another thread, I also tried a ping by name and then IP address but noticed no difference: # ping -Uc4 bbc.com PING bbc.com (212.58.224.138) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from virtual-vip.thdo.bbc.co.uk (212.58.224.138): icmp_req=1 ttl=116 time=13.5 ms 64 bytes from virtual-vip.thdo.bbc.co.uk (212.58.224.138): icmp_req=2 ttl=116 time=14.0 ms 64 bytes from virtual-vip.thdo.bbc.co.uk (212.58.224.138): icmp_req=3 ttl=116 time=13.8 ms 64 bytes from virtual-vip.thdo.bbc.co.uk (212.58.224.138): icmp_req=4 ttl=116 time=13.8 ms --- bbc.com ping statistics --- 4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3003ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 13.566/13.824/14.070/0.213 ms # ping -Uc4 212.58.224.138 PING 212.58.224.138 (212.58.224.138) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 212.58.224.138: icmp_req=1 ttl=116 time=13.9 ms 64 bytes from 212.58.224.138: icmp_req=2 ttl=116 time=13.7 ms 64 bytes from 212.58.224.138: icmp_req=3 ttl=116 time=13.8 ms 64 bytes from 212.58.224.138: icmp_req=4 ttl=116 time=13.8 ms --- 212.58.224.138 ping statistics --- 4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3004ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 13.732/13.851/13.982/0.148 ms Does my resolv.conf nedd different entries? I would appreciate any hints or tips. Thanks. |
Is this wired or wireless?
Try to disable ipv6 Try to use another DNS, like 8.8.8.8 (google), open dns or the DNS from your provider. Try to remove Quote:

Repo,
Thanks for your response. This is a wired connection. I tried your suggestions, but still slow speed. I changed nameserver to 8.8.8.8. I restarted NetworkManager after making these changes. Did you do the other things? (disable ipv6...) Kind regards |
I disabled ipv6 and even disbaled selinux but still slow speeds via speedtest.net. Current download/upload speed on Windows 7 is 33.88Mbs/1.58Mbs. Fedora 14 - 4.36Mbs/1.68Mbs
