I'm not a total newbie, but enough of one to not know what to do here.
I haven't used Fedora since Core 1.. I download FC3 yesterday and installed it. (To start to replace my Windows XP usage) I am dual booting into Windows XP.. If I am in Windows XP, I can surf the internet just fine, everything is pretty fast (cable modem).. So that rules out a hardware problem.. I have a Linksys Wireless G (WRT54G) router, and I have this machine set to a static address (for port forwarding purposes). I have the addresses and hostnames all set the same on both OS's. DNS lookups are extremely slow on the FC3 OS.
We are not talking about a 2 or 3 second delay. We are talking anywhere from 10 to 60 seconds. Sometimes it's pretty quick and works normally, but that is pretty rare. If I type in the IP addresses instead of domain names, it's as quick as lightning, but any domain name can take forever to resolv.
I haven't updated anything yet, up2date just freezes every time it tries to go get information.
I haven't tried setting it to completely go DHCP yet, but I am going to try that when I get home... When I had FC1 on it before I didn't have this problem at all (although different network setup at that time, I had a RH 9 server as my firewall) ...
Where do I start to look? Is there anything I can post to help aid in troubleshooting?
when i've been in that sort of situation, it's normally been a local dns server with issues, which times out and then finally the local machine reverts to another source. if you do a lookup directly to a nameserver of your choice, using dig, e.g.
Code:
dig @192.168.0.1 google.com
this will insist that 192.168.0.1 is exclusively used for dns services, so you can try various ones, local and net-based to see where thing's are lagging. maybe your wireless router is being queried when it should be? what does /etc/resolv.conf say?
I'll have to try the dig when I get home. I set up pptpd so I could access it from work, but I goofed on the config last night when I was doing it, so the local IP I assign is conflicting with the IP address schema here at work.
I had the wife set up a port forward for SSH to that machine in the router, and for some reason it's not able to get there. She said she did it right, and it's pretty simple to do with that router, so I wouldn't imagine she botched it, but you never know.
I do know that resolv.conf had 3 lines in it last night.
The first line I think said Search and then the domain that my ISP provided then their 2 DNS servers that got assigned to my router.
I took out the first line after I was having some problems and restarted the machine and it still wasn't working. I also tried it with the internal IP address of the router and it had the same results.
Why yes I was using firefox and yes I did have IPv6 enabled... While screwing around with it last night I found a post on another forum that said to disable it. I did that rebooted. It seems to be ok now...
