As unprivileged user, root account user or all users? Any other basic commandline tools (from the same package?) that failed? When did this start? What changed at that time (reconfiguration, upgrades)? Does verifying your installation ('rpm -qVva 2>&1|tee /tmp/rpmverify.log') show anything odd? Anything in the logs?

[EDIT]...and if the machine you're talking about is running Fedora Core 6 (update your profile please) then you should think about upgrading (caveat) or reinstalling Fedora 9 first IMHO.[/EDIT]

Actually ,I'm having this problem with a root account and also the same error "segmentation fault" shows up when I try to edit a file with the vi editor.
P.S:The machine is running on a Fedora release 5.

To me it sounds like something happened behind the scenes to glibc or another lib. What were the results of the rpm command that unSpawn gave you? If it also encounters a segmentation fault you definitely have issues with some of the core libraries. While it is possible to fix this using recover mode on the install CD, it is quite time consuming. You would probably be better off saving your data and performing a fresh install with a newer release. If it were me, I would do the later.

for the RPM,It has been executed without any problem, but I'm still having problems with the commands mentioned above.
And for your solution ,at the moment I can't re install the OS.

I asked you more questions than you answered w/o details. If you are unable to answer w/o reason then I am not able to help you. If you are unable to answer because you can not perform some commands try running them from your installation CD (you can use it as a Live CD) or run any other Live CD.

And please give a compelling reason why you can not upgrade or install an OS. Fedora Core 5 is old, deprecated and no longer maintained. This means you miss out on all the important (security) improvements and fixes.

Next to Glibc problems (while you have not shown any proof for it) segfaulting could be due to a compromise. As a hedge I will post the Intruder Detection Checklist (CERT): http://www.cert.org/tech_tips/intrud...checklist.html in case you want to try that approach.

Whatever you do you will have to post less terse to provide us with things we could help you with.
