screen resolution preference's

Here's a good one,
while screewing around with my screen resolution, I set it to 1280x960, while my monitor only supports 1024x768. now when it boots into X windows my monitor ( thankfully ) just scrolls a warning around the screen
I have booted into the system under init3 and am looking for the file to change the default resolution. For now I have the fastest most powerfull terminal around.

fedora core2 if it matters

Any help would be appreciated

Mike,
You can restore your last configuration by renaming the conguration file '/etc/x11/xorg.conf.backup' to /etc/x11/xorg.conf' - which is the config file for displays.
Cheers

OK, so I found a fix, but I still dont think it was the proper way. I just edited the xorg.conf file and removed the 1280x960 resolution from the config. But what I wanted to do was find the file that actually holds the preference and tells X which resolution to start in 800, 1024 ect....

Oh well at least I got it running!!!

Now if I could just get rid of that damn up2date icon in the tray!!!! :D

Thanks FeralTitan, funny I posted my reply at the same time you did.... I went and looked at the xorg.conf.bak file and noticed that it did not have the 1280 setting in there. But when I use the GUI under >system setting>Display It still shows 1280x960 as an option. So I'm guessing that they are not related. Does that xorg.conf file have a mode setting that tells X what you want to use or is it the order that the modes are listed?

so if I put:
modes "800x600" "1024x768" "640x480"

would 800x600 be my default resolution?

slowly but surely!

Just have a look at /etc/X11/XF86Config.
