samba on centos
 

Hi, I am setting up a samba share on a centos system. I am at a basic level, I try to add a user, I add a username, windows name and password and then OK. But the name does not appear on the list of user names - there are no names. I try and enter the same name again for this user already exists".

Any little tricks I need to see the users I create?

You need to be a bit more specific. What commands did you use, on what list don't you have usernames, etc... in order for someone to understand exactly what you need. The more information you provide, the quicker someone can help you.

Okay, I went in to the gui system->admin->server settings->samba

I set up the preferences->server settings. Then preferences->Samba Users.

Click the "Add user" button and add user details (username, windows user name and password) and then OK. When I return to the "samba users" windows there are no names. Similarly if I try and set up a share and define access there are no user names displayed.

If I go along to /etc/samba/smbusers I can see the names I set up:

# Unix_name = SMB_name1 SMB_name2 ...
root = administrator admin
nobody = guest pcguest smbguest
lname = wname

I hope that gives you something to work with.

Hey Tim,

Seems like on the file level everything gets processed correctly because you have users in smbusers created. I'm no GUI guy myself so I have no idea why the users don't show up. I'm sure someone else will pick up. Sorry couldn't help you further.

Request you to post the commands you are using and errors too.

Hi Vikas, the points I made in #3 pretty much sum up my actions. No errors along the way. If smbusers contains the user names should that be sufficient?

You MAY have to restart the samba service in order for it to pick up the changes you have made.

In the future you would be better served posting Centos questions in the RedHat section. Centos is RHEL with the logos removed.
