RPM or latest from distribution site

I have a Fedora Core 1 installation which is running our mail server (postfix) and webmail (horde et al) and am now looking at expanding the horde stuff to include FTP and CVS.

Therefore, I need to install an ftp server (vsftp?) and cvs.

My question is this: Is it better to install from the RPMs from the distribution, or is it better to get the latest and greatest from their respective sites? (or perhaps a third option that you will tell me?)

Thanks in advance.

Eric

I would almost always say go to the site and get the latest stable version - especially when it is an outward facing service that people connect to. I find rpms etc are ok for installing newer versions of vi or openoffice but they usually take a while before the latest version is available. From memory, vsftpd is one of the simplest source installs I've done.

Thanks for the note. As it is, these will all be listing to localhost only. (horde service will be the access mechanism)

Thanks,

-Eric
