Root user denied permission to update/install software

When I tried to run an .rpm file on a newly installed fc9 system as root I got the message that I do not have the necessary permissions to perform that operation. Can anyone suggest why?

run an .rpm ?!

start root terminal
cd /folder with rpm
#rpm -Uvh abc.rpm

will install the rpm!

If you want to run program 'abc', then type 'abc' in 'run command' or terminal

I'd highly suggest using the graphical pkg mgr option (Add/Remove Sw) or the yum cmd line tool. These will automatically handle dependencies for you.

Thanks, people for your suggestions, but whatever I try to do as root I get this message that I do not have the necessary permissions to install software. My difficulty is that I installed fc9 from a dvd which seemed to work smoothly but I only have a Netgear WG311 wifi card installed for network access. This works beautifully under Windows XP but under fc9 I apparently need madwifi and its dependencies to get on to the internet. udev does not appear to recognise this card. I have tried accessing the Livna repo via Windows/Firefox and downloading the necessary files to memory stick then copying them to a directory under fc9 when logged on as root, but I still get the infuriating message that I do not have the necessary permissions to install software.
Can anyone help? Please! It's driving me insane!

Then stop screwing around and post the actual commands/error messages.

Do you really think we can read your mind?
