Rhythmbox and MP3s on Fedora Core 3 (Test 3)
I've been trying (without success) to get Rhythmbox to play MP3 files on my system. I've found that I seem to need a file that can be installed by the command "yum install gstreamer-plugins-mp3". However, when I run this command (in root mode by using the "su" command), it says:
No Match for argument gstreamer-plugins-mp3
Nothing to do
I have run yum-checkupdate before runnning the "yum install" command, and that hasn't helped.
I've also found that apparently, the file I need is available from http://rpm.livna.org/, but I haven't figured out how to down load and install it.
How can I get this installed? Thanks in advance for your help!

edit yum.conf to include the linvna repositories... livna should have the proper code on their site --
--they do -- scroll down to 'sources for fedora core' heading...
...well... except that you're using core3 test3 -- you'll have to actually look in their repositories to see if it's there, but i suspect they won't carry it until the end of the month when core 3 is stable.

OK, I tried using the code on the site to edit yum.conf, but like you said, it didn't work (probably because I'm using Core 3).
How would I look in the repositories manually? I couldn't find any links, and I'm still very new to Linux.

I've never understood why Fedora don't include MP3 and NTFS-read support. Yeah, the come out with some nonsense about legalities, but when just about every other distro has this ability from the off...?

Yeah, I haven't figured that out yet. I can't see how it would be legal for me to free/open source MP3 players but illegal for Fedora to make an agreement with that software's author to distribute it.
I tried editing my yum.conf file to include the info from http://rpm.livna.org/ and changing it to look in the repositories for Core 2, but it complained that I didn't have a necessary dependency file that wasn't available.
Edit: here's the message it gives:
Error: missing dep: libid3tag.so.0 for pkg gstreamer-plugins-mp3

I'm running Fedora Core 3 Test 3 on one of my dedicated Folding @ Home computers. After reading this thread I tried to get Rhythmbox to play MP3s the same way as I did in Fedora Core 2 Final, and it didn't work. When I tried to play a MP3 Rhythmbox shut down.
If you want to play MP3s on Core3 Test 3, use XMMS. XMMS is way more mature and stable anyway. Obviously, if XMMS isn't installed, use Start -> System Settings -> Add/Remove Applications to install it. Then go to
here
and download the file. Then gunzip it, then untar it. Follow the instructions in the readme file.
Another interesting link is
here
This will get you by until Fedora Core 3 Final comes out.

The extra packages at http://rpm.livna.org and http://fedora.us have not been rebuilt for Fedora Core 3 Test releases.

Don't ignore the big warning on the http://rpm.livna.org main page.

It is no nonsense, and there are enough major distributions which don't include software with patenting and licencing issues either.
typo fixed

I had no luck to get Rhythmbox w/ gstreamer to play my MP3 files but Rhythmbox w/ xine lib works great.

Thanks for the reply! I've tried it a few times, but my internet connection isn't working right (it's refusing to download files randomly), so I'll have to try again some other time.
