Unhappy Rhythmbox 0.6.1 and Fedora Core 1 sound problems

Running Rhythmbox 0.6.1 on Fedora Core 1. Running KDE 3.1.4-4 desktop. Need to terminate the arts sound server in order for Rhythmbox to access /dev/dsp. Rhythmbox includes the "--enable-sound" option to make it play nice with sound servers, but this does not work. Even if I start it with --enable-sound, it complains that it cannot get hold of /dev/dsp. My only option is to terminate arts in a script that launches Rhythmbox.

But I don't want to terminate arts!! Any advice?

thanks,

I've tried Rhythmbox, tried everything to make it work, and have come to the conclusion that its just not compatible with Fedora.

XMMS only took me two minutes to set up, I've spent an hour a day on Rhythmbox and it still doesn't do anything.

i've gotten it to work on fedora, however it was dependency hell (a little like my relationships)...having trouble now with oss making everyone sound like chipmunks and esd not forwarding to the next track...but i agree it is a bitch...beep-media-player werks well but i have a massive mp3 collection and rhythmbox peruses it nicely

there is something wrong with rhythmbox, it plays ogg fine for me, but not mp3, which is not that much of a problem since 90% of my music is in ogg anyway, but xmms and zinf plays them all. Zinf as really become my player of choice. Its playlist editor is really good. Give it a try.

# Q: How do I make XMMS play MP3s?
A: Before I talk about this, you should know: In the United States and other countries, you legally must pay patent royalties to use MP3 players or encoders.

With that said, the plugins for these things are usually in the rpm.livna.org repository.

1. Set up your yum.conf to be able to access rpm.livna.org. (See the question about getting Fedora software)
2. Open a Terminal.
3. Become root. (su -)
4. Type yum install xmms-mp3.

# Q: How do I make Rhythmbox play MP3s?
A: Remember, there are legal issues. See the XMMS question.

With that said, there are a few ways to do this:

* Follow the instructions in vegan_linuxguy's forum post.
* Use the prebuilt RPM at this site.
* Get the RPM of gstreamer-plugins from DAG's RPM repository. Note that it has a lot of dependencies that you'll have to get from DAG and FreshRPMs.

Taken from http://fedora.artoo.net/faq/
I'll try the Rhythmbox fix as soon as I get home

thanx for the assistance as well as the warning....

ya...i got rhythmbox to play mp3's my problem i think lies with esd...the sound daemon i have configured gstreamer to use, it plays the songs perfectly but then stops playing at the end of the song...no matter wut config i have it in...oss plays them too fast and they sound like chipmunks but it forwards to the next song...however oss plays fine with beep-media-player...i am confused
