restore or reinstall?

Hey all, i did some very stupid recursive permissions and now i have issues all over the place. I think i will need to just reinstall the OS. HOwever this is a server that i am using, and i am nowhere near the machine.

Question: I used to be able to ssh in no problem. Now i cant, but i can still ftp??
when i ssh i get this error:
Code:
Server unexpectedly Closed network connection
ideas????

I have a friend that can access it if need be, but I am curious if there is a simple restore of the OS instead of using the ISO disks to reinstall??

Using Fedora core 4.

THanks so much

I'd say you have a problem.
With screwed permissions, I would do a reinstall. I don't know of a restore, rather than a previous backup, which your friend would have to be pretty sharp to restore it. Since it's on the net, better bite the bullet and re-install.

If it makes you feel any better, I once did the same thing. Couldn't ssh, and at the box couldn't su - or sudo. Really pissed me off. Luckily the server was near by. Worked at it a day or so little success. No problem with the data permissions, just the OS. Even if I got it working, I'd always wonder what I missed that was open to the net. Bit the bullet, reinstalled and was more careful from that point on.
