Resizing icons for panel

This has happened to me several times, and I wonder if there is an easy solution.

I install a new program, put a launcher on my desktop using the appropriate icon.

Since it's a program I plan to use regularly, I'd rather have it on the panel than the desktop, proper.

The icon looks fine on the desktop, but when I move it down to the panel, it looks big and ugly compared to the icons that are native to FC3.

Can I somehow optimize it for appearance on the panel?

I always edit my icons with the Gimp..

There are different sized icons for all the apps that Fedora installs from it's CD's (well most of them). If you can't find 16x16, 22x22, 32x32 and 48x48 icons for an externally installed package, you'll have to use gimp.
