Resetting Username & Password - HELP

I'm new to linux. I have just started a new job as well and the person I replaced passed away and therefore I have no way of finding out the username and password for a much needed Linux Fedora 3 box. Can anyone instruct me on how to reset the admin username and password... or anyway for me to solve this problem?

All help is much needed and greatly appreciated.

Can we trust you that your not doing this for malicious purposes?

I'm not going to tell you how to do it but you can by using a rescue or bootup disk to reset the password in the appropiate files.. ;)

I found an artcile that had a similar solution. I have no way to make a boot disk though. Is there a place for me to download a boot disk?

Try booting up with the installation disk. There is either a 'enter rescue mode' option, or select 'rescue' for the kernel image. You could also download and burn a live distro. You will need to manually mount the systems root partition. Then edit the /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow file and remove the encrypted password entry for root. After that, you can reboot, log in as root without a password, and use 'passwd' to set a new one.

Using the search function on this site will give you more detailed instructions such as how to mount the root partition, how to use the vim editor, etc.

Lastly, I offer you my condolences on losing a co-worker.
