Reinstalling FC 4 without deleting /home directory

Hello,

I think I deleted my bootsplash (I think that's what it is, it's supposed to show up when I've finished typing my username and password) when I was root. But now, I can't even get to the screen where I type in my username + password (I have a blue screen, and nothing else).

All the startup services start as being OK, and then I don't get a login screen. Is there a way for me to reinstall FC4 without losing my data (which is a important data).

I tried using knoppix 3.6 to access my hard drive's storage, but It wont let me access the hard drive. I would appreciate any feedback on this topic.
Have a great day!

first press CTRL+ALT+F1 at the blue screen

login as root.

type
init 3

type startx

it'll now load X and if anything goes wrong it will be printed CTRL+ALT+F1.

2
type
mount

logged in as root
i want to know how your HDD is divided.

prob fixed

Hey, you're the best, man. Your suggestion helped, but It didn't fix the problem. All I did was reinstall fedora core 4, back on my existing /home directory -- without deleting my data. I woulda cried if I had formatted my HD. Have a great day, all!
PS: I let fedora allot my hard drive's space to itself (60GB) --> I let it automatically partition it, since it's the only OS I'm running. I'm quite content with it *now*

  1. you can reinstall and shrink the 60GB
  2. You can shrink the HDD Mandriva has a graphical diskmanagement tool to do it.
  3. i would image Fedora has one too.

  4. or make a folder on the 60GB for all you stuff (not recommended though.)
/storage/ you make a link to /mnt/ like there really is a drive at /mnt/storage/
