Which distro are you using? Try installing flash through the distro's package manager if possible.

I'm using the latest advertised-as-stable fedora core 6 distro that I installed yesterday from a few ISOs off a mirror http site, then burned onto CD. Upon installation and initial run through, I noticed the brown paper bag in the upper right of the Gnome screen with a balloon attached that said something like "Security Updates" or something like that; 180 or so, according to it. I decided to let that run, so I clicked on the brown bag, and it took 2 hours to use Package Manager to do what it wanted to my system.

Whatever distro that finally became earlier today, is what I'm currently running. I'll try looking for a Flash RPM, I guess. That's a good idea. Thanks.

You can go right to the source: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer9.html

Download the Linux Installer package, untar it.
Follow the instructions and stick it in the appropriate plugin directory.
Restart Firefox. Go to about: plugins and confirm that the plugin is seen.

Flash and JRE are installed, but firefox 2.0 says they're not
 

I'm a :newbie: to linux. I installed FC6 x86_64 a few days ago and I've been tinkering with since then. I figured out how to update from firefox 1.5 to 2.0, when I did I realized there was no flash or java plugins, or so I thought. I downloaded the installers from Adobe and Sun and ran them as instructed only to find out they were already installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Sun and Adobe binaries are 32-bit only, so they won't normally run under 64-bit Linux. You either need to install a 32-bit version of Firefox (which I've never tried doing) and install the plugins on these, or use alternative versions of the plugins that support other architectures than x86, such as Blackdown Java and Gnash. I'm not all that up to date on Fedora so I don't know what the best way of setting these up would be, although I suspect that Blackdown Java is available through yum.

If you're new to Linux and it's possible to do so, the easiest advice would be just to install the 32-bit version of Fedora for now. 64-bit systems are backwards compatible with 32-bit, so you won't need to do anything special and everything will be easier to get working.
