Record sound using two programs at the same time - ALSA

Hello everyone!

I'm a Fedora 8 user and I need some help configuring ALSA (at least I think it's ALSA I've got to configure). I'm trying to record a podcast and I need to do it through Skype. Our aim is to each one of the "podcasters" record his own voice in his computer and then we merge it all togheter, so the sound quality gets better. The problem is that I'm not able to record using Audacity (or any other sound recorder) while I'm using Skype. And I can't use Skype while using Audacity.

The problem is that ALSA doesn't let two different programs get the sound from my microphone at the same time. I've searched all the internet for how to configure ALSA so it let me do what I want, but I found no reply. What I've found is that there IS a way of doing it, but can someone, PLEASE, explain how?

Note: I DON'T want to record the Skype call, I want two programs to be able to record the sound from my microphone at the same time, just like I can do it on Window$.

Thank you in advance,
Lucas Cury

If I understand correctly, I think you need to install the JACK Audio Connection Kit sound server. I'm not an expert by any means, but this server allows you to "patch" several sound programs together to allow recording, mixing etc. There should be a rpm available for Fedora.

Jack also has a web site, google it and you will find it.

There is a gui you can install also, to make it a little easier to do the patching.
