if the php that's on my Fedora box was put on by the setup routine, how can I recompile that so it works with MySQL? I need to do this so I can get phpBB to work

What version of FC are you running? I am running FC3 and there was no problem with PHP support of MySQL out of the box. I don't recall ever having problems with PHP supporting MySQL connections under FC.

It's fc4. The reason I say that I need mysql support is because when I tried to install phpBB2, I got th error telling me that php wasn't enabled or compiled for mysql support or something like that. I'm not at home now so I don't know the exact message
