Question Real Audio to play MP3s? (Also, Direct X)

OK, first I need to figure out how to get/install Direct X for Core 4 or get it to see what I have in Windows.

Second, is there a way I can get Fendora (GNOME) to at least "see" the NTFS drive I have, like mounting it read-only or something?

Thirdly, I have tried all the MP3 players (as well as anything else audio-related) that came with the darn CDs, and I get this blip that I need Real Audio to play MP3s. @_@ What the flip???

And WHY is it no matter which distro I try installing things never works??? Crud, half of the time I have to be root just to unzip something. @_@

Switched to FC4 from Slackware 10.2 because I thought *maybe* this would be easier (partially on advice from friends,) but unless a download is a .rpm file, I have no end of trouble with it.

Why does Linux hate me?

Thanks!

like stated DirectX is for windows, you can try wine (http://www.winehq.com) that implements it's own API's etc.

mp3s are not out of the box in fedora since they come with licensing issues, and as stated above use yum to get the codecs
Code:
yum search mp3
or for xmms
Code:
yum install xmms-mp3
http://www.linux-ntfs.org/

downlaod the .RPM, follow the instructions and you will be able to mount NTFS partitions.

Linux doesnt hate you, it just requires some research (google is your friend) and common sense, once you get in the swing of things, stuff that seemed way out there starts to make sense

So no running anything in WINE that requires Direct X? That's mainly what I'm looking to do.

Ick...hda5 is full, and I can't figure out how to tell yum to slap stuff on hda2 or hda6 instead. (And I can't seem to do diddle under any account besides root. >_< )

And Google never seems to help, as weird as that may sound. Until someone writes "The Complete Idiots Guide for ***** ***** [my name] to use FC4!" I think I'm a bit out of my league with most of what Google spits up.

Grrr...I'll just consider it fortunate that I figured out how to get yum to update. :P

I think wine implements something similar in order to get it to work, check out their site, you will also need proper graphics drivers to play games.

Gaming on Linux (especially ones built for windows) is still a bit wank tbh, but it'll get there, and probably do it a whole lot better

Linux can be a bit hard to digest and odd when coming from different environments, but there are ALOT of guides out there:
http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz
http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...ion_notes.html
http://www.tldp.org/

They are the ones that help me out.

As for the problem of where to install, i'm not sure if you can install to a non root partition, and if you could it must be a linux filesystem to ext3

Ubuntu is currently one of the easiest distros to use, apparently.

The easiest way of getting read-only support for ntfs would be to run 'yum install kernel-module-ntfs'.

If your wanting to run programs that require direct x (im presuming games here), try using cedega , its not free but they focus upon the directxc apis and things, im not sure how strong wine is on this point, but i would hav though cedega would be more suited seeing as its soaly designed just for windows game playing.
