You're not using fdisk properly. You need to run:

fdisk /dev/hda

This sets up the entire partition table. Please be careful and read the manual on fdisk carefully. You need to setup the first partition as a Linux partition (0x83). Then write the new table. Then create the ext3 filesystem.

Shortly after posting with you guys, I tried using fdisk after reading the man page (what I thought to be carefully) and ended up blowing up my machine. During boot up, the fstab was not able to be read and even though I booted into rescue mode and tried to overwrite the file with the original one, the change would not take effect.

So in the end, I ended up getting my extra 27GB of space but I had to reformat my drive and re-install everything loosing all my data.
