Quickcam 4000 pro and Fedora Core 2

Has anyone successfully used a logitech quickcam with FC2? The Quickcam was succesfully configured by kudzu. I downloaded xawtv and the 2.6.5 patch for it. I compiled and installed it. Xawtv spit out the following:

[niverson@lanshark niverson]$ xawtv
This is xawtv-3.92, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.5-1.358)
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-ledfixed-medium-r-*--39-*-*-*-c-*-*-*" to type FontStruct

Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)

[niverson@lanshark niverson]$

Actually, I have never successfully used the quickcam with Redhat 9 or Fedora Core1. My motherboard has the cmedia 8738 onboard sound which would conflict with my quickcam --- no sound after the quickcam was installed and configured. The conflict seems to be fixed with FC2.

I used the 9.0 beta 2 drivers found here:

http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/

I followed the directions in the download and didn't even let kudzu have a chance. The only issue is I don't have the sound working yet, I'm going to buy a microphone and see how that works. It has a builtin microphone but I haven't played around trying to get it to work.

UPDATE: I installed xawtv and couldn't get it to work either. I don't get the errors you get but I don't get any feed from my camera. It works fine, except for sound, with gnomemeeting.

try another program, because xawtv is difficult to configure. I use camstream and works well with a logitech quickcam.

Hello,
I am using a Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 and microphone in Linux right now with little issue. A few things i'll point out though to help save you any trouble.
1.)xawtv really does kind of suck when trying to get it to work initially, that error line you posted was basically saying xawtv was trying to display your camera at an unsupported resolution, once you get the correct drivers loaded it should be a little easier to get working.
2.) The qc4000 is a Phillips based webcam and in order to display at decent resolution you need to download and install the pwcx module and load it after the kernel provided pwc module is loaded. I could not even get the camera to display at 320x240 without this module which is why i recognized those error lines from xawtv. I will also note I had to start xawtv with flags telling it what resolution to use before success with that program.
3.) The built in microphone needs usb-audio to work, load the module audio (modprobe audio) to use the built in mic.
4.) check http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam it will have the pwcx module and instructions as well as other very useful info when it comes to these cams.
I curently use it most with ayttm on yahoo which allows for chat with webcam very decent as web cams go.
hope this helps some. Sincerely, Dan

xdan779, how did you do the webcam with yahoo using ayttm?
Then again what is ayttm? is it a plugin in Yahoo? Can this also work Gaim?
I am using Quickcam Messenger, so i suppose i could use the same info you posted for the Quickcam Pro?

Ayttm http://ayttm.sourceforge.net is a messaging client that supports several different chat protocols (yahoo, aol, aim etc......). One of its most interesting features is its ability to support yahoo webcam. You will need a couple of things for this to work though.
1.) In order to take advantage of yahoo webcam ayttm requires Jasper http://www.ece.uvic.ca/~mdadams/jasper
2.) You will also need xawtv which includes the webcam program that ayttm uses http://linux.bytesex.org/xawtv
A couple of gotchas I ran into
3.) you will need to create the webcam.jpeg (default name) file and its directory manully. (mkdir .ayttm/webcam then touch webcam.jpeg) you will get a blank screen otherwise. These settings can be viewed and edited by opening up the file .webcamrc in your home dir.
you can also set your resolution in the .webcamrc file, if you don't have the pwcx module installed make sure you set this to 176x144 or less otherwise again you will have a blank webcam screen.
As of special note I have not been able to load the pwcx module since upgrading to slackware 10, because from what I can gather it was compiled on an earlier version of gcc. hopefully it will get an update soon cause 176x144 kinda sux.
I am writing this rather quickly so if wrote something in a way that doesn't make sense or if you experience any problems feel free to let me know. Sincerely, Dan

xdan779, I have a quickcam messenger. I am not at home now to test these programs listed. However do any of these programs or codecs have dependence and can I use Synaptic to acquire and install them?
Also let me get this straight, I am going to create the .ayttm/webcam directory in what location? home directory?
I am assuming that .webcamrc is created when I install one of the programs mentioned above, and how would i find out if my kernel has the pwcx module?

I will try all these things tomorrow, if i am not too busy shell scripting

Is there a utility that i can use to install these programs because ayttm has dependencies that are asking for some key? And I am a newbie in a sense, so i don't know how to go about this installation.
