Question - How Do I Set UP ???

Ok So I'm a noob to Linux but I'm sick and tired of Microsoft
I Recently downloaded about 30+ different Distros of Linux searching for the version that I liked I found that Fedora 8 was a nice and clean distro so I installed it on my Toshiba Satellite M60 - BK3.

My First question is I was wondering how to set up so a user account who has full control over the system and doesn't have to use an Administrator
password to save or edit files or is restricted to only certain file sections. Kinda like a User Admin Account.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

My second Question is I have a Really Old Laptop with only a floppy drive
It is a Nec Versa 5060

it has 48 mb Ram
its CPU type is a Pentium with MMX : 166MHz
it has 256 KB Catch Ram
it has a 100gb Harddrive
I was thinking of installing a Desktop Linux on it just so I could use it for Djing...
now I've tryed connecting that harddrive to my other laptop and installing DSL on it but when I go to put the harddrive back into the other computer it doesn't boot up and says Operating system not found...
any other way I could get a distro of linux on there?
somthing with that will only be used for Internet & Music Viewing??

Thanks for viewing this and any help on these topics would be a great help :D

so your question is basically "how do i destroy the time tested security frameworks whic are there to protect my system from accidental and unauthorised damage?" well, i'm sure you can tell i don't think you should... don't. you can configure /etc/sudoers to allow you to use sudo if you wish, or just use su by default. don't screw with your normal user and do not use root as a normal user account.

well i really just want to be abble to install a file to Amsn and install some widgets from google :P lol but don't know how is there a Fedora for Idiots :P

but ya what you said sums up exactly what i want to doo :P

acid_kewpie 02-24-2008 01:30 PM

well running "yum install amsn" as root (open a terminal and enter "su -" to become root in the first place) should do it. that's what *I* would do, but mainly because i tend to avoid gui's for software management etc... i expect that it's even easier going through pup / pirut or whatever the right tool is called.

djissues 02-24-2008 01:35 PM

well so far i logged in a root and gonna see if i can set the folder up so i can install the file in that way then i don't need to remove the security settings :P

as for installing onto my old junky laptop any ideas what or how i could go about doing that :D

acid_kewpie 02-24-2008 01:36 PM

folder? what folder?

djissues 02-24-2008 01:39 PM

Amsn I opend the folder and now i'm downloading the custume skin for amsn and downloading the plugin and oputing it into the flugin folder

acid_kewpie 02-24-2008 01:42 PM

still no idea what "the folder" is, doesn't look like it'll matter...

djissues 02-24-2008 01:57 PM

Ok so I logged in as root

opend "Filestream/usr/share/aMsn/"
Downloaded my pluggins and Skins
placed them into the pluggin and skin folder logged back in with my user account
and loaded my plugins and skins and tada it worked

now to just get this old laptop up and running so I can use it with my entertainment unit

laptop hard drive troubles

Hi,I dont know if this is of any help but i had a problem with my old dell laptop not seeing an operating sysem. It turned out I was putting the hard drive too far into the caddy and it wasn't showing up on the bios.By moving it about in the caddy...pulling it slightly to the back, the laptop then recognised it.Hope this is of help,if it doesn't help you hopefully it'll help someone else.It drove me nuts and cost me the price of another hard drive because I thought it was broken hahaha.

Just curious: if you don't mind telling, what software do you use for DJing?

djissues 02-24-2008 11:41 PM

I would normally use my Windows computer for djing but its kinda blukey and big to carry around to partys as for software i could just use winamp or PCDJ.

as for the laptop issue.. I have checked the hardrive and it is in all the way and it knows its there it reads it in bios but having a a floppy drive and 48 mb of ram kinda limits me to what I can do with it :P this is way i would want something that only runs the basics such as a mp3 or media player, Internet browser, and a Text pad, nothing fancy..

I would like to put DSL on it but cant get it to install since it has only a floppy drive and none of my other computer have a floppy drive lol
