Problems starting Fedora 8
 

Hi.

Don't know why, but today my Fedora 8 laptop started with problems on boot. When the boot starts, it says something like "Mounting local filesystem: Failed" (don't know the correct message as it is presented in portuguese) then it continues to boot but doesn't load all the modules! It starts gdm and I can login, but don't have network, sound, and all the other modules loaded.

How can I solve this problem?

Did you recently update your kernel? Make sure Grub is pointing to the right kernel and initrd image.

No, haven't updated the kernel.

Dude! I have the EXACT same problem!
I also had the can't mount file system message with Fedora 7, but everything worked ok with it.

I'll be watching this thread keenly for the answer!

I'd still hazard a guess that this is either an issue with grub, or maybe your initrd.img file is somehow bunk. I'd verify that /boot/grub/menu.lst is pointing to all the correct files, and if it is, then create a new initrd.img and see if that works.

The message is typically generated when one of the entries in /etc/fstab is incorrect or pointing to a physical location that's been changed. Open a terminal window and compare the output of the mount command (no arguments -- you just want a display of what's mounted) with the contents of /etc/fstab to see what's failed to mount.

Since you're able to boot and log-in, I'd be surprised if anything that's not being mounted is very critical. And non-critical things would not be likely to cause problems loading things. So my diagnosis may be wrong.

The first thing I've done when the error started was to compare my fstab and mount command and they were all OK. I've solved the problem by reinstalling Fedora 8. Anyway, is someone knows a soluction, this should be posted here as there could be other people having this issue or will have it in the future.

Me too Miguel!

My problem was I didn't create a new bootloader when I installed the first time.

I reinstalled Fedora 8 and checked the box to allow a new bootloader and everything is working fine now.

Also I now have dvds mp3s and divx playing nicely!!!!
