problem with subnet mask

I'm sick of windows and decided to put linux back on my laptop, only i didn't know which distro to put on. after playing around i have decided that the distros i enjoy the most are fedora and ubuntu. so i installed fedora 10 on my laptop and configured my ethernet settings but the subnet mask ip address does not stay at what i set it at. it should stay at 255.255.255.0 but after applying the ip address it reverts back to 24. how do i fix this?

thanks

Where are you configuring?
If you mean it goes back to
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/24
then /24 = 255.255.255.0

known bug... the GUI incorrectly writes the data back to the file.
Code:
service NetworkManager stop
manually edit the ifcfg-eth* file with all the correct settings.
service NetworkManage start
yum update

Can you ping 192.168.0.254
Can you ping 74.125.79.105
Can you ping www.google.com
Do you have the DNS setup correctly?

yea... lets see your whole ifcfg file... there should be a DNS1=x.x.x.x line in there for name resolution
