Problem with audio CD
 

Hello everyone,

I have recently updated FC5 using yum update and among the numerous things that have been updated is the kernel. I now have the kernel 2.6.16-1.2096-FC5. The problem now is that I can't play audio CD's anymore. However when I boot on my old kernel (2.6.16-1.2080-FC5)it plays audio CD's very well.

Anybody knows what the problem could be?

What error does it give when playing your CD's?
Curious: Do you have SELinux enabled?

Yeah, sorry. I should have given more details and I realize that I'm an idiot for not aving done that because here's what I found.

The first thing I get when I insert a music cd is this:

And when I insert that cd in my cd burner the music starts playing. So the problem is with my CD/DVD player. However, when I insert any non-music cd in it, they are mounted no problem and I can get the data that's on them.

I dont't know if it's useful but the info I get on my driver's brand when I do dmesg is:

hdc: SONY DVD-ROM DDU1615, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive

And as I said before, I don't have this trouble when I boot on my old kernel.

And just to satisfy your curiosity, yes SELinux is enabled, as it is when I'm on my old kernel too.

Alright. Forget I said anyhting at all. Problem solved.

I've done another update and removed a few stuff but his time with Yum Extender. I still have no idea what the problem was but SELinux is one of the things that have been updated and I removed Totem. Could be that or could be something else. Anyway, now I can use my CD/DVD player for my audio CD's.

thats exactly the same problem i have! if you remove totem, what do u use to play the cd!? and how did you update SELinux?

I simply use the CD Player that comes with FC5 to play my cd's.

As for updating SELinux, I didn't do anything special. I simply used Yum Extender (some times I use Yum Extender and somethimes I do "yum update" it's the same thing anyway)and SELinux was one of the updates that were available at that time. I never tried to update SELinux specifically.

But guess what buddy. I've recently done a new update (with "yum update") and I now have a new kernel: 2.6.16-1.2122_FC5. The problem came back! I guess the kernel is just having a hard time with my CD/DVD player.

And one more thing friend.

I only get that bug with audio CD's. I can play DVD's without any problem (I use xine), but it doesn't play audio CD's (not even with xine). If you happen to have an explanation for this, please let me know.

i was having problems burning in windows when i found on the internet that might be a problem with the cabling... i am going to disconnect the old cdrw drive [leaving the new dvd-ram] and try again...

Audio CD + Totem = not really good
 

OK everyone, I had the same problem:
first CD drive plays audio CD OK
second gives the error messge "Totem could not play this media (Audio CD) although a plugin is present to handle it."

I followed what Iltbreg did as a quick-fix and it worked (I removed totem from my FC5 installation with "yum remove totem")

It works fine now with the CD Player that came with FC5.

I could not figure what was the problem, but it seems to me that Totem was looking at the wrong place, and I could not find how to setup Totem properly.

I'm not sure if the problem really is Totem. Even after I removed it the problem resurfaced and I was getting the "Drive Error" from the CD player. But it was never constant. One day it wouldn't work with my DVD player but it worked with my CD burner, the other day it was the opposite, then comes another day where it works with both drivers and it also happened a couple of times that I couldn't play music with either one of them.

I've recently reinstalled FC5 (not because of that bug) and the problem hasn't shown up yet. I now have Totem-Xine instead of Totem. I do a test after each update I do.

You have to manually set the CD-ROM drive which is to be used by Totem, if you have more than one.

Edit > Preferences > Optical Drive Path

I might be wrong now, but I don't think so ...

After upgrading to FC5, I had the same problem as lltbreg : Totem...

More precisely, I got this diagnostic on CD/DVD player and DVD recorder.

Following the suggestion "yum remove totem".

Situation is not brilliant :
-Sound juicer from Gnome can read on both devices.
-but KsCD or FC5 audio player don'n work, on any of the 2 devices.

I also faced same problem. I could play audio CD from the CD-ROM but could not from DVD-RW using Kscd and Fedor CD player. But using Sound Juicer I was able to play from DVD-RW as well. remove did not work as I did not have totem. Then I found a post from shtik. For KsCD to work I went to Configure KsCD selecte Use direct digital play back and tried with different backend. alsa worked for me arts did not work.
For me this problem started after using k3b to copy a CD.

Following nbhat, I did configure KsCd : not only alsa, as for him, but
I had to specify the peripheral(/dev/hda for me).
Then KsCD recognizes the audio CD! BUT, I am not able to find the "play"
button in KsCD window.

You may also want to check the permissions for /dev/hda and /dev/dsp. I was having problems with the permissions after I ran aplay as root. I tried different combinations ultimately I gave 777 to both /dev/hda and /dev/dsp. I foudn the exact error message while using KDE control center sound setup and test.

I have found a solution to this problem.
I'm using Mandriva 2006.0 Free Edition and have had the same problem with audio-cd's.

I am having a close problem. I took out totem, because it's pretty bad software anyways and isn't good for much. My CDs will play in my CD-RW drive only, but not the faster DVD drive. The CD-RW drive will play it for a few secs, then freezes up.
