Problem booting in a headless configuration

Greetings,

I am running Fedora Core 2 with a kernel level of 2.6.6-1.435.2.3.

I wish to run my server completely headless (i.e. without a mouse, monitor, or keyboard). The problem I have is that the system frequently hangs on reboot since I have removed the mouse, keyboard, and monitor.

I have configured my BIOS to ignore the lack of a keyboard, which it does, allowing the system to continue booting to Linux. The boot process proceeds to and past grub, choosing the default kernel and initiating the kernel load, which is where the process hangs sporadically.

When I attach a monitor to the system, the last message on the screen is always:

“Uncompressing Linux... OK booting the kernel”

At this point I perform a hard boot and watch the system reboot (with the monitor still connected). In many cases this process may have to be repeated several times before a successful startup is achieved.

So my question is, what configuration steps are required in order for my system to boot successfully and consistently in a headless configuration?

Just an additional note, I removed the "quiet" option from my default kernel in /etc/grub.conf in order to receive more potential diagnostic information when the kernel loads.

The final messages on the screen when the kernel is hung are now:

vesafb: probe of vesafb0 failed with error -6
apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x0b (Driver version 1.16ac)
