please help me upgrade my fedora 15 system to fedora 17
 

I've been a windows user for long time and ditched it for fedora about 15 months ago...

fedora 15 has been pretty smooth, fast and safe for me...i love it totally!
when fedora 16 was released, i couldn't manage to get time and upgrade my system and then i decided to upgrade when fedora 17 is released...ending the support for fedora 15.

Please help me upgrade my system to fedora 17 without changing any of my settings (i had to spend tons of hours to make everything work perfect, except printing!!)...

please do not redirect me to webpages...I'd highly appreciate it if you could guide me with your experience as to what is the most suitable method for a user like me..

Forget preupgrade, it never works.

Download the dvd iso and burn it, and then: back up everything you have to an external drive. dejadup is good for that.

Then insert the dvd, follow the instructions. You can choose 'fresh install' or 'upgrade existing system' If you have everything backed up properly, go for 'fresh install', I think that's better. But upgrade is maybe better for you. Fresh install may wipe out other partitions if you are not careful (mine did!!) It will leave Windows alone.

Then just let the dvd do its work.

If you have no network on reboot, when you are logged into your new system, call up a terminal, enter:

nm-connection-editor

A window will appear, and you can configure your internet. Then update everything, probably will be 500+ packages.

You are then ready.

I can backup all my data on my friend's computer but, i need my settings to stay intact at least...i can't afford to reset everything...
can dvd upgrade help me keep my settings intact while upgrading the system to fedora 17?

Back up all your personal stuff regularly anyway, that is wise.

Then go for upgrade existing system. That should not change your settings.

is there any other way you'd like to share? have u tried this method too?
i mean...i've never done any upgrade so, i don't wish to end up with a messed system.

You can download the liveCD and boot with that, try it. If you like it, click 'install to hard drive'

The upgrade will go smoothly, but I find every version of Fedora has its own problems. For instance, now I can't use 2 screens, which is annoying!

I'm actually dual booting fedora with windows b'coz my printer is among those 0.5% proud printers which are not compatible with linux...
i've got 30GB windows partition out of which about 20GB is free...so, can i temporarily back up some of my data to the windows partition and get it back after upgrade?

I would try to use another hard drive, or if you don't have too much personal data, just put it on a dvd.

I use a 320 GB external hd, because this is a laptop. If you have an ordinary pc, you can get a cheap hd, put it in the computer, and use that as your backup hd.

What printer do you have that Linux cannot handle??

i'm dual booting on laptop only but, i don't have any external hd so i thought...may be i should back up on my windows partition.

i've canon pixma ip1300 printer...i tried to install it using every method....even asked here few times but, still no help...after all setup, it ejects blank papers...so, i quit and now i have to boot twice a week at least into my windows OS for printing only!

Your windows partition should remain untouched by Fedora, if you have another partition to use. Otherwise, it will have to be shrunk to accomodate Fedora. That is normally no problem, unless it is very full.

But it would be wise to write important stuff elsewhere, like a dvd or another hd, just in case, and also for future use if your computer goes totally wrong sometime! There are some sites that offer free cloud space up to 5GB or more. You can store a lot of data for free!

I never got Ubuntu cloud to work, but it is an option.

1) unfortunately, my printer is pixma ip1300 which is not on that list...some say that ip2200 driver will work, but i tried all of it already.

2) some of linux users recommended me to use pre-upgrade...they said that it saves lot of time and effort...is it so? have u ever faced any trouble with that?

I have tried preupgrade since about Fedora 11 or 12. It has never worked, and it did not work when I changed from Fed 16 to 17. I always try it! One day it may work!

It installs everything, and puts an entry in grub.cfg to boot /preupgrade/boot/vmlinuz but it cannot start. It never has.

But you can try it, you might get lucky! It cannot do any harm.

if i were you,i would alter my /etc/yum.repos.d/xx.repo to just run a "yum update"to upgrade to fedora 17,but i prefer fedora 15!!!

so, i should try preupgrade once?

do i have to still back up my system before using preupgrade?
