Pirut/Add Remove Packages problem in Fedora core 6

Hi everyone
I am using Fedora core 6 ....
when i have opened Pirut -- Add/Remove Packages application
i am getting the following error...
-----------
Unable to Retrieve Software information
This could be caused by not having a network connection available
-----------

but i am able to connect to internet in the browser
Is pirut not enabled with the right options by default

Does Pirut/Add or Remove Packages allways need internet connection...

If so How is the name[Remove Packages] suitable to it??

CAN ANY ONE PLEASE HELP ME TO MAKE IT WORK PROPERLY SO THAT I CAN REMOVE PACKAGES EVEN WITHOUT NET CONNNECTION ..

EVEN THE SOFTWARE INSTALLER IS ALSO USING NET CONNETION TO DOWNLOAD AND SOME DEPENDENCIES EVENTHOUGH THE DEPENDENCIES ARE THER IN THE dvd ITSELF

How to make use of the fedora dvd to install all the dependencies ????

this is the only problem in one of the best distros fedora which irritates me....

Please help me to solve the problem ????

THANKS IN ADVANCE
bye

Open a terminal window, and become root (su -), then run yum manually:

yum -y update yum*
yum -y update

Once it has completed your should be OK with pirut. To remove packages without a network connection, revert to rpm:

rpm -e package

i am getting a message that there are 256 updated packages...i am afraid about the disk space that it consumes...i have only 7GB left in my linux partition......
i didnt update it because i saw some updated packages which i dont use...

CAN U TELL ME HOW MUCH SIZE IT CONSUMES TO INSTALL THESE UPDATES????

IF I WANT TO SELECT THE PACKAGES WHAT IMP PACKAGES SHOULD I SELECT???

You also received a message regarding the space in the yum output. In any case, the entire system takes considerably less than 7GB, so you will be fine.

While there are packages you don't use, keep in mind that some of them are used by other parts of the system.
