You've got a very frustrating and unknown problem. Your config looks ok but php isn't working on your server.
This is very strange.

I suggest you to make use of the package manager and reinstall apache and the php packages.
That should work because by default apache and mod_php works well.

Also checks what apache are you running, maybe if you got installed php4 and the old apache when you installed the php5 packages you also could get a new apache 2.0 install too (apache 2.0 and previous versions can coexist).

And, of course, check that your apache works with standard html files. Did you see the standard apache init page?

Hi I don't know if you are still having a problem. If so I'll see if I can help.

First off the apache web server will take the resource and process it in some way. If Apache is configured correctly then it will look at the file extension and if it believes that it is a php file it will send it to the php preprocessor. But before we get there we need to be very clear what is happening at the moment.

So a few simple questions?

1) Does apache process a simple html page correctly?
2) Did you look at the page through apache? (i.e. was your URL something like localhost.index.html)
3) What was the extension of your php file?

Please answer these and then we can move to the next step.

Did you try running the script through the command-line PHP interpreter ("/usr/bin/php")? What output do you get from that? Best of luck!

So we have a php echo that works but the phpinfo() function fails...

can you please do the following[list=1][*]comment out the phpinfo line[*]add echo "<br> echo highlight_file(test.php);[*]add the phpinfo line again[/list=1]

Please do this one step at a time, recording success or otherwise and if you have a failure make a copy of the file and call it testfail1.html.

I can then look at the exact code that you are having a problem with, run it through my system and see if I can duplicate the problem.
