OpenGL rendering on Fedora 18 with an Intel Corporation 82852/855GM not working?

On an older laptop that runs Fedora 18, and has a Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device, I cannot get OpenGL to run on it.
In fact, I have no 3D acceleration whatsoever. I have the correct drivers installed, but I can't get OpenGL to work.

glxinfo reports:
Code:

name of display: :0.0
X Error of failed request:  BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
Major opcode of failed request:  152 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request:  3 (X_GLXCreateContext)
Serial number of failed request:  22
Current serial number in output stream:  25

In fact no GLX application will start, all of them stop with the same error message.

Do I have to enable it in the Kernel or put something into xorg.conf?

It might have something to do with this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...l/+bug/1071530
I'm not sure, though.

I tried downgrading my mesa drivers, but I can't really downgrade that far, I can only downgrade one minor version contained in the repos.

There have been a couple of upgrades recently, but none of them solved the issue.

I doubt it'll help, but here's the contents of xorg.0.log:

The Worst-Case scenario would be to "wait" until Fedora 19 and see if it solves things. Not having 3D acceleration is unfortunate, but not essential in my case. It's still annoying, though.

Hi:

I looked for a driver for your Intel 82821/855GM card and I couldn't even find a linux driver for it-

The only other thing that I can think of is to move to the most newest stable version of the kernel (3.8.2) if one is having hardware or performance problems. But even that may not work. You could replace the graphics card. I know some are expensive tho-
https://www.kernel.org/

I'm still running FC 17 but will be installing FC 18 sometime next week.

Fedora's front page has news daily; maybe this is a bug like you mentioned-
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/I...WN/LatestIssue

Known Bugs
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F18_bugs

Didn't see anything out of the ordinary in the 'xorg.0.log'
I bet a Guru or a Moderator would know what to add to the xorg.configuration file-
Fixing bugs is not one of my skills; sorry; polemon

Fedora 19 might solve this problem--

Ztcoracat 03-04-2013 10:28 PM

I looked up one of the log messages not using default mode got me to thinking well if default isn't set than so wonder it's not working- -
Quote:

Not using default mode "400x300"
It looks like this Debian user solved it:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/.../msg02588.html

This Archlinux user solved it as well:
" Xorg Default Screen Resolution Settings"
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=140315

Hope this helps-:)

polemon 03-05-2013 05:07 PM

The mesa driver for the Intel cards is old news: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Intel
It has been supported since many years, and according to my xorg.0.log it's correctly detected.

In fact the driver works OK, for the most part. The problem is, 3D acceleration is not working. Screen resolution and frame buffer mode is OK, too. I think I'll wait for another week or so, and see if someone upstream a bugfix.

Ztcoracat 03-05-2013 07:06 PM

Yeah, a bugfix sure would be nice.:)

3D acceleration is not working
Could it be that a 'switch' is either enabled or disabled somehow?

Your not the only one with this 3d acceleration issue-
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questi...ion-82852-855g

Besides this above link the only other thing I could find was How to fix 3d acceleration for Vmware on a Workstation. Didn't think you wanted that-

Maybe within the week or so that your waiting another member might see this thread and solve it with a known workaround-
