old radio sound

I'm not getting good sound from the CD player (grip). Well, maybe not the sound of an old radio, but the sound from a radio when a station is far away.

I've just updated from Red Hat 9 to Fedora and there hasn't been any change. If the volume level is turned down that helps some but it's inconsistent. Are there any parameters I can change or is it because the system is a PII 400mhz?

However, the sound is much better in Win98 although there are traces at times.

If your soundcard is supported, you might benifit by installing alsa. As I understand it it's not a trivial installation ( I haven't done it yet my self). Check out :

If you install ALSA, you must also install an ALSA -enabled kernel. You can get these from freshrpms.net. I have had good sound, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

I gleened from the Fedoranews site that the Fedora 2 SHOULD have an ALSA-equipped kernel stock. That isn't set in stone. I will wait for that as my Fedora is working so well otherwise now.

They are migrating to ALL ALSA at Fedora, so that is the direction things are going anyway

The kernel I have is what was downloaded with Fedora (kernel#2.4.22-1.2149.nptl). I've installed alsa twice on this box, once under Red Hat 9, and now under Fedora.

Is there a different kernel I should download from freshrpms. Frankly, installing alsa takes some care, but went smoothly. Just takes patience (or perhaps some luck).

Here's what I just did...
Follow this link --> http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-fc1.html
scroll down and do EXACTLY what it says under Install ALSA Drivers

Worked perfectly for me just make sure you have the right kernel module loaded I found mine here (for Kernel 2149): http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrp...1/alsa-driver/
(hold your mouse over the links to see the full filename)

Good Luck

I built my alsa modules (compiled) in the 2149 kernel. Would my installation then be the same as the binary modules available for download?

Update:

While looking more at the alsa install and available packages I decided to install alsaplayer. (I've been playing CDs with grip. ) So far I have to say that the problem I originally mentioned seems to be quite less. Very impressive.

I will be going back to some of the other CDs where I noticed the problem, but so far in the listening I've done this morning the difference is impressive.

Alsaplayer seems to be a pretty good app. I'm impressed.
