To a few of you that were telling me in another thread that you like to convert people, here is your chance. I will tell you what hardware I have, what I need the OS to do, and I have 25gb set aside on one of my drives to install FC5 to. I will dual-boot with XP for now, but if I can get it to do what I need with relative ease, and I can get comfortable with it, I might make the switch. I have another PC here under the desk with it's own LCD and a KVM for the mouse/kb, so for things that require Windows, I will be covered.

My hardware:

2X Geforce 7800GTX in SLI
Creative Labs X-Fi

74GB WD Raptor SATA
400GB Hitachi SATA
Samsung 16x Dual-Layer DVDRW
Liteon 16X DVDROM
Dell Ultrasharp 2005FPW 20.1" widescreen flat panel

I will take out the X-Fi and slap in the Abit AudioMax 7.1 HD daughter card for now.

OK, what I need the system to do:

NVidia 3D drivers running in SLI mode
1680x1050x24bit resolution
DMA enabled on all drives
Full multimedia playback(Win32 codecs, libdvdcss, mp3, etc)
Able to run the following games via WINE; Half Life 2, COD2, Far Cry, Quake4 and FEAR
Able to mount and read from my 400gb SATA NTFS drive where all my media files are stored

If I can do those things without it taking an act of Congress, I can switch over and really begin to dive into what opensource has to offer.

So, do you guys see anything glaring right up front before I begin, or should this be fairly smooth sailing?

Well, first crash and burn already took place.

Tried to install it, all was going well, but a bug popped up while it was trying to install an lm_sensors package, and the install aborted. Hit reset, rebooted into XP, and my entire 400gb SATA drive is now formatted in ext2, which means that I lost over 300gb of files, everything I have!

I F'ing made sure that when I did the setup, I told it to use available free space with default layout and I *only* highlighted my 74gb Raptor drive. Double and triple checked it.

So I am in WinXP, but F;ing Fedora cost me everything. 20,000 songs, hundreds of TV shows, etc... All because of a buggy installer. It formatted a drive that I did not select, with a file format that I did not select.

Bravo Fedora developer team. Bravo.

I'm sorry you lost your data - but the Fedora developers made it abundantly clear that FC5 is in development, that it might eat your data without warning.

You should have stuck to FC4, which is quite stable.

I fell your pain but the really ironic thing about the whole deal is the lm_sensors package is useless for that board it does not support the uguru chip, if you ever decide to try again look on the abit forum for the oguru program which will work with the uguru chip. Of for your list of requirements. 1) You need the latest drivers from nVidia they support SLI and as long as your cards support the resolutions you want it should be no problem as long as you set the proper refresh rates for your monitor. 2) DMA should be enabled by default on a SATA drive. 3) Pretty much any media I want plays even without the win32 codecs on my 64bit install. 4) Haven't a clue about wine. 5) You can mount and read ntfs without problems. BTW you should never do an install like this without backups or at the least unplugging the important drive so nothing can have the possibility of happening to it.

If you want convert then convert, were not going to waste our time on you.

you may want to get fedora core 4, 5 is the testing version. I'm not sure what you did, but the 400gb drive should not of been formated unless you did something wrong on your part. Can you tell us/me what you did.

Well, I did not select the lm-sensors package, that was just what bombed, and it said that it might be due to a bug, and then when I clicked on OK, it died.

As for "what I did", I clicked on the 74GB drive and ONLY that drive, and said "use free space with default layout", which it created the / and swap using EXT3. I never selected the other drive, and I certainly never selected EXT2.

But it formatted the drive anyway.

I have a backup of some of the data, but my second external drive just had the 200GB drive pulled out and put into my spare machine as that HD just bit the dust.

So I should be able to pull much of my data from the other external drive, but I have bad news... About 140gb of some of the best pr0n around, is gone forever.

I want to cry. hehe

It could be worse, the music and tv shows would be harder to replace.

But I tell you, WTF is with that installer? I have installed 15 different distros over the years, probably 50 installs in all. Never had this happen. Clearly some sort of glitch with the installer.

I'm sorry if you lost some data. But honestly I don't think is a Fedora problem.

I just installed Fecore Core 5 Test 3, and the installation went ok.

In one of my boxes I have four operating systems: SuSE 10 x86_64, Gentoo AMD64 with nocona flag, Fedora Core 4 and now Fedora Core 5 x86_64. When installing Anaconda recognized that I had Fedora and tried to upgrade, I chose to do a manual configuration, done it very carefully and when finished Anaconda prompted a window when it CLEARLY STATED that it will format some partitions in my hard disk, at this point I double checked that it was the right partition and then proceed. So you got at least three chances of checking that you were using the right partitions. Why did you accept to format the wrong partition?

As far as I have seen, Fedora Core 5 is very impressive, however I'll have to wait until ATI releases the driver with support for X.Org 7.0 for having 3D acceleration.

By the way, you should always do a backup of your sensible information before doing an installation of ANY Operating System.

Badly burnt install media (CD/DVD). It was you who chose to skip the media check. Why blame us?

It was you who chose to format the partition, even when anaconda (the installer) had warned you that you will lose all data on the disc.

You have to specify a root partition (/), without which anaconda will not proceed to the next screen. Highlighting alone does absolutely nothing. You have to actually create a partition or format an already present partition to ext2/3 before anaconda begins the next step. Verdict: it must have been you who chose to format the partition. You could have read the installing instructions available freely on the net before you took the plunge, but you chose not to do that.

Well, my friend, clearly, it wasn't Fedora whick cost you everything. It was the same attitude which you are exibiting here today.

K3B dual layer on Sony
 

Hello I would like to know how if possible to burn a dual layer dvd for maximum data backup (movies, data backup, etc...)
I'm running FC4 with K3B and a dual layer capable sony dvd burner.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about k3b, but it should have support for it. k3b is just a frontend for cdrecord, so check the their web site

All I can say to you is umm where is your backup, you did backup right!?

dude your system would rock. Install FC4 or just wait for FC5 to be stable.

simple rules:
1. backup anything you can't lose
2. physically disconnect any drive you don't want wiped by the install. If you can't disconnect it (e.g. you are only wiping one partition on a multi-part drive) see rule #1

Sounds to me like this person is just trying to stir up trouble. Hey guy, stick with Windows. Linux is not for you.
