nvidia v...7676 on FC4smp loads black screen

I'm a newbie to linux but I don't think I'm incompetent. I just need some pointers. Anyway, I just installed FC4 on my PC with WinXP-MCE as well.

The install goes fine and KDE loads up but with the default settings from install. I tried installing the latest nvidia drivers several ways ... and I ALWAYS get the damned black screen.

Here's some info about my system:
CPU: P4 3.0GHz
GPU: Geforce 6600
kernel: 2.6.13-1.1526_FC4smp
monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 715v (LCD)
TV: composite connection

The things I've tried:
disable SELinux (I think ... added 'selinux=0' to kernel options in grub.conf)
installed via nvidia.com's install application with no errors during install
installed via yum and livna (kernel-module-nvidia...)
installed via yum and ATrpms (nvidia-graphics7676-kmdl..., nvidia-graphics7676.x86_64)
in all instances, I ensured xorg.conf edits were as noted in nvidia's install README.txt

Note also that the Xorg.0.log had no errors (ie, no (EE)). Everything seemed to have loaded with numerous lines beginning with 'NVIDIA(0)'. According to this log, everything should be okay ... but I get a blackscreen, some flickers of small noise on screen, no mouse.

I'm always able to go back to default settings by doing 'yum remove' and then returning the xorg.conf to its original state.

Somebody, PLEASE HELP ME. I've wasted so much time already!!

Paul

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.

i have only been using linux for a few months, but i figured i'd respond since i have the same video card. i did not have any problems on install. i had a couple issues when i updated my kernel and driver. in the end, i used:

yum install nvidia-glx kernel-module-nvidia-$(uname -r)

it sounds like that is what you did, but i figure i'd throw that out there. out of curiosity, did it detect your monitor correctly? i've installed fedora 4 on 2 computers (1 with amd and one with a p4) with a 6600 and i didn't have trouble on either with the above command.

...i googled your monitor and it looks like they added support for it back in f3 (last may). i'm interested to hear what fixed this when you find out.

I'll ask what you might consider a stupid question, but do you have the correct kernel devel rpm installed for the smp kernel? You should have kernel-smp-devel, not kernel-devel. I would think your Nvidia installer wouldn't work, but who knows -- I don't use the smp kernel.
