NVIDIA + nouveau + display settings = unable to switch back!

Hi,

I don't know if it's a GNOME or a nouveau driver issue, but here's the thing: I click on System Settings -> Display and try to change the screen resolution. I can *lower* the resolution but I cannot switch back to a *higher* resolution - the screen fades to black and I have to restart my computer.

Has anyone experienced this kind of problem?

fedora BY default uses nouveau for Nvidia 3d cards
and is built into the boot image

you might want to read the fedora guide on the driver
it is in the GUIDES section on the Fedoraforum

Yes I know. I recently installed Fedora 17 on a note with an Intel card and the Display Settings work alright. So it's a nouveau thing. I tried the nvidia driver but... I *really* want a high-resolution (1920x1080) bootsplash and console... and all the gaming I eventually do is mainly mednafen so... I decided to keep the nouveau driver until I'm able to work on a high-resolution bootsplash/console.

no it is not
if it is an intel chip
it is NOT using the Nvidia opensource driver

it is using the INTEL driver

it WAS NOT going to be used and can not be used by a INTEL chip

a intel chip can not use a nvidia driver

You didn't understand, I've got a desktop with a NVIDIA card and a notebook with a Intel chip.

what nvidia card is it
nvidia is killing off support for old cards
or
is it a built in nvidia laptop "chip" on the mobo

in order to use the "plymouth" bootscreen you HAVE to use the nouveau driver

the fedora fancy splash is EXPLICITLY coded to use that driver

with the kmod-nvidia rpm you can set the the xorg file ( not used by default )
you said you "tried" the nvidia driver ( the kmod-nvnida.rpm???? )
and you DID rebuild the boot image?????

now you say you went BACK to the "nouveau"

you will now have to rebuild the boot image TO USE the nouveau instead of the nvidia
AND
remove the udev block
and possibly remove the "nomodset" in the boot line
